This litter of 4 puppies was not a planned breeding but due to circumstances beyond my control it happened. The sire and dam were DNA tested and found to be carriers of Exercise Induced Collapse, an inheritable disease, mostly among the Labrador Retriever breed of both types of Labs. It is shown that 30-40 percent of all Labrador Retrievers carry the EIC gene.
When a puppy inherits a gene from both parents he/she will be affected with the illness that may lie dormant until 2-4 years of age possibly continuing to produce more affected puppies if both parents are carriers or affected with 2 copies of the EIC gene. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals notices this and as of June, 2013 recommends the health screening of EIC in addition to hip and elbow evaluations and annual eye exams for the Labrador breed.
In an effort to amend the unplanned breeding of these 4 sweet and loving puppies we have taken the most responsible measures, sometimes waiting until we had the funds to do so, to schedule vet visits to microchip and DNA test all 4 puppies through a licensed veterinarian to accurately and positively identify and verify the test results.
With a carrier to carrier breeding statistics show that 25% of the puppies will be clear of the EIC gene, 50% will be carriers of the EIC gene, and 25% will be affected with the EIC disease inheriting a copy of the gene from both parents. We are very blessed to learn from the laboratory results that there were NO AFFECTED PUPPIES. The results were 1 clear puppy and 3 carriers. A carrier will never show any signs or symptoms of ever carrying the EIC gene.
The larger of the 2 black males is the puppy who DNA tested clear. The other black male, the yellow male, and the yellow female are carriers and are off to a great start to a healthy life. They were born on March 19, and at 5 months old are weighed in to be on the larger side of average. The yellow female weighs 57 pounds and the largest black male weighs 65 pounds.
They have been socialized with our other dogs and have been learning manners more and more everyday. Their personalities are developing into well behaved, affectionate companions who do their best to please. A picture of each puppy is listed. The yellow male naturally is retrieving without training. They are an absolute joy to be around just like their parents.
The sire and dam have the most loving and pleasing personalities. They have multiple titles in their pedigrees. The sire is also obedience trained and very tolerant of his puppies.
The sire is black and weighs 75 pounds. He is OFA hip certified Excellent, OFA elbows certified Normal, DNA tested Clear for CNM, DNA tested Carrier for EIC, DNA tested Normal for PRA, and his eye exam results were normal.
